For the eco-conscious (all of us?) and frugal, I just came across this at Home Depot:

Trimaco 9 ft. x 12 ft. 2 Mil Eco Plastic Drop Cloth – Price: $4 ($1 more than the regular stuff)

I haven’t used it and won’t have a chance to use it for several months, but it seems like a good option. I post it here so that others will know about it, and perhaps try it out and report back.

That sounds great if you want a disposable drop cloth, but wouldn't a hiker want something that lasts forever? I switched over to biodegradable trash bags (.68mil) for home use, and if they get wet, they start to show holes within a week.

More like Tighty Greenies…

I was originally feeling awesome about this, but I guess it would begin to decompose while it's underneath your tent, heated by body heat and ripe with moisture. Bummer…

"but wouldn't a hiker want something that lasts forever?"

A ground sheet that lasts forever would be very (relatively) heavy. It takes a lot of abuse.
With so many light, cheap groundsheets the disposable method makes more sense but I do see the resource consumption problem with that.
