Polarguard goes the way of the Dodo

Just like everything, they have to make changes just to increase sales? Oh, this new insulation is lighter, compresses better, yada, yada, yada.

BTW, when is the new replacement to Polarguard coming out, I MUST have it? LOL

Does this mean that PG Delta is gone as well? I guess my Cocoon 180 quilt, that I'm waiting to receive, just lost some of its resale value? LOL

I am assuming Climashield is the replacement as it is made by the same company.

According to some sources—and Ayce may have been one—Polarguard Delta was going to be discontinued over a year ago, and yet…..

What's exactly in the full message on the Thru-Hiker message board? I can read the title but can't get access to the full message.
Afaik, there's supposed to be a new version of Polarguard, X200, but I can't find a lot about it (nothing actually).
I'm under the impression that Climashield doesn't really replace Polarguard but that Western Nonwovens decided to produce something on their own.

It appears hard to confirm consulting the Usual Sources.

Polarguard.com is up and running, extolling a new flavor. Parent company INVISTA has nothing, nor does parent company's parent company, Koch Industries.

I must have missed it when Hoechst dumped the Polarguard brand.

So, Polarguard is more like the coelacanth than the dodo in that reports of its demise may have been exaggerated. Rest assured, given enough duration, all predictions of species (or product) death will come true. Besides, how long before global warming makes all insulation layers superfluous?

Well…the military, once Polarguard's big buyers, will have to switch to Climashield.

IF Climashield is truly:
1. more compressable
2. more reselient
3. warmer per weight
4. more durable
than all other Polarguard iterations THEN I'll say "OK, good change."
If not then it's just a marketing ploy.

"All Polarguard branded products have been EOL’d (end-of-lifed) by Western Nonwovens and will no longer be manufactured as of July 31 ‘07.

I like Paul at Thru-Hiker. We have had many long conversations about making gear. I also know that Paul is in the business of selling material and that Polarguard Delta has never been available for retail.

It is like the old saying "If you can't love the one you want, love the one you have.

Polarguard Delta has several great qualities that the other insulation don't have.

Polarguard Delta is a great insulation and was and might still be the best available in a 2 ounce per sq yard version. The 2 ounce Delta was a special run and I expect Ryan had to get a bunch to convince them to run some at 2 ounces per sq yard. The Delta that was made by Western Nonwovens was 2.6 ounce per sq yard. Delta has been tested a lot and found to recover from dampness (wet out) faster because of its large fiber size. From what I have read the Cocoon line was created for wet conditions and Polarguard Delta was chosen because it was the lightest at 2 ounce per sq yard and the best when wet. It also was the easiest to work with.

I don't have a dog in this fight (as they say) as I don't (at this time) sell anything. I do own several of the "Cocoon Line" items and I am very happy with them. The weight is everything for me and only what I make for myself is lighter.

I really like Polarguard Delta insulation and I have enough to last me for everything I will ever want to make.
