….a lighter insulator.

I have a cut up and re-sowed wine bottle cooler for my Fosters Pot (thanks Dan) insulator so my coffee/tea stays warm for a little longer in cooler temps.

I was aiming at 70g for my entire cook kit but ended up at 98g. In the picture is my Fosters pot and lid, Ti windscreen, Ti esbit stove and stand combo, mini bic lighter, plastic cover lid for can not to spill it's contents, neoprene insulator. Not in picture is my 2g spork.

My neoprene insulator is 26g and am looking at a lighter option.

Any ideas?

Ta, Mik.

Why not cut the insulator down by half. I assume you don't have the fosters can full when you're using it to drink from, so only insulate as high up as your normally have it filled.

Won't cut 28 grams, but should cut some.

Leave the pot stand at home – Use rocks or tent stakes. Take a pair of snips to your windscreen and trim it down a bit. Microfleece might be a lighter cozy or use a pair of socks as your cozy. Use a small light rubber band, instead of a plastic lid.

Try making a cozy from Reflectix and duct tape. Or if you're really serious about the last couple of grams, use ripstop nylon sail repair tape available from http://www.sailmakerssupply.com

My Foster's can Reflectix & sail tape cozy is full height and weighs 14 grams, so I guess you could get it down to 10 grams or so if you went only half way up as suggested by Doug I. Save 16 grams.

You could also skip the plastic lid for the can by using the cozy up side down, so the bottom covered the top to keep everything in. Save 3 grams.

Finally, order some titanium from Titanium Goat and make your own pot lid (or buy one of my GOLD Gear titanium pot lids – $4). The beer can pot lid weighs 6.4 grams, whereas the titanium weighs just 2.7 grams. Save 3.7 grams.

How much does your can weigh? It looks modified. Zelph's flat bottom short cans weigh 27 grams. But a regular Foster's can is just 24.3 grams, and Zelph's short ridged cans are just 20 grams. Save 2.7 to 7 grams.

Total savings: 25.4 to 29.7 grams.

I immediately ditched the plastic lid and as suggested can invert the cozy to keep things in.

The breakdown of the items are as follows;

Fosters 2 cup flat bottom pot (ordered from Zelph Stoves Dan is the owner) 27.3g
Fosters alu lid 4.9g
Ti Windscreen 11.6g
Mini Bic Lighter (about half full) 10.9g
Slightly modified Esbit pot stand and stove 11.9g
Full-height Neoprene cosy 26.4g
GRAND TOTAL 92.9g

My thoughts are I really want to concentrate on the Neoprene cosy for the moment.

1.Yes cutting the cosy down by half is a great start even though the full height of it makes the cook kit look complete astatically.
2.Where can I buy thinner Neoprene as mine is 3.5mm thick?
3.The cosy in current form is a little tight….might be a bit of a struggle with hot liquid in the can to fit it without spillage or getting burned so maybe restarting with a new piece of neoprene might be the go as I have massacared our one and only wine cooler carrier for this project :).

Dan also sent me what looks like a 1 cup Alu cookpot, it weighs 14.6g. That is enough for a cup of tea or coffee. It just depends on the amount of water I need to heat up for the dehydrated dinners really. Might be able to get away with the one cup cookpot then my total system weight would be nicely reduced by 12g PLUS the shortened neoprene (probably save 8g?)…..a total of 20g roughly.

GRAND TOTAL 73g but no 2 cup pot :(

What is it you need a cozy for the pot for?

I bring a styrofoam cup inside my foster pot for coffee, weighs 0.05 oz.

If it works everyday at the office, why not use it on the trail too.

@ Kevin – Reflectix is the type of idea I had….something that reflected the heat back into the cup. I thank you very much for your offer but will try other things before hand. Ta muchly :).

@ Dan – will check this out today. Ta

@ M B – I find that the thin Alu can looses heat incredibly fast. I like my beverage warm for at least 5 minutes so that is where the cozy drive is coming from. Styrophoam cup holder?????….might be a goer too!!

Thanks again guys for the feedback!
