I just made a silnylon footprint for my Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3, and I wanted to share a little tip:

Because many tents have "wider" and "narrower" ends, but the difference is only a few inches (i.e., not IMMEDIATELY visible, esp. after a long day on the trails), I decided to use 2 different colors, one for most of the footprint, and a second color for the narrower end. (Seam sealed, of course)

I followed the basic design of the Big Agnes footprint (which has a seam, anyway); did the main part in navy blue and the narrow end in red. Now when I'm tired and want to set up camp, I know immediately which end is which…Bi-color Ground Tarp

Or you could just write an S with a permanent marker or simply use different colour tie-outs
Here an even easier one to remember :

All great ideas, Franco, giving people a choice of many different options — the marker would be great for light-coloured footprints, different colour tie-ins would be an easy modification of an existing brand-name footprint, as would the diagonal-cut corners. And my original suggestion works especially well to use up smaller pieces of silnylon left over from another project.
