I purchased this headlamp over a year ago. Until recently, most of my hiking has been in the daytime and it spent most of its existence in my ditty bag. I store it in a way that I'm absolutely certain it doesn't accidently turn on while in my pack.
I've recently had an opportunity to log about 10 hours (combined) of night hiking using this headlamp; when I night hike, I keep the headlamp on the low setting which is rated for 96 hours; I'm not sure about lumen output on low but one subscriber at Candlepowerforums.com indicated that he believes that low is 35 lamp lumen output. I'm sure I overlooked the obvious but I couldn't corroborate this on P Tec's website.
I installed fresh lithium batteries a month ago. After 10 hours of use, the headlamp dimmed to a point where I didn't feel comfortable hiking with it. My inner cynic believes that this is a) how the Byte achieves the rating, and b) why P Tec does not advertise the lumen output on their website. If someone can find it on their website then I'll eat crow later.
There were some concerns raised in this thread about the Byte:
I'm no longer inclined to give this headlamp the benefit of the doubt and it will be retired to my truck for roadside emergencies. My experience with this headlamp is obviously anecdotal but I just wanted to share my experience.
Not that it makes a difference at this point but I was happy with all other aspects of the headlamp.
