I experienced serious crotch chafing on a recent backpacking trip. My hiking pants were a prime contributor to the problem so I tore out about 12 inches of the crotch seam. See photo of actual pants below.
To my relief this strategy worked. I was also pleased and surprised to find that the mosquitoes and biting flies did not fly up the now open crotch. Don't know why exactly. Perhaps it was the back and forth movement of my legs in the area.
I was wearing running shorts underneath the pants so I wasn't exposing myself to passing hikers.
Don't know what to call this new garment. Not really kilts or culottes. Neither Crants nor Potches works. Ideas?
Photographers note: Black crotchless pants are hard to photograph. I resorted to stuffing them with a pillow.

[breathes sigh of relief]
;-)
Chaps, I think, is the closest to what you have, although I guess they're individual leggings suspended from a belt.

Chaps sounds close. There is still the upper pants portion, however. Hmmm "chapped kilts" "skirted chaps" "long legged crotchless panties"?
