This is a preliminary review of 2 day packs.

The Flash is 22 liter and weighs 16oz,the Kompressor is 20liter and weighs 12oz.

I bought both packs and am trying to figure out which one i will keep.Tough choice as they are both excellent.
I packed them with my full 2 liter platypus,a pair of hiking pants,a base top,a fleece jacket,a synthetic jacket,a large towel,a small thin pull-over.

The Flash has a better design and layout. Also the material seems much tougher whereas the Marmot seems like it could tear if it is dropped on sharp rocks or tree limbs.

The water storage for the bladder is more secure on the Flash. In the marmot its unsecured in an exterior pocket-bend over and bladder may fly out.
The Flash has some built in foam backpadding which is nice if you sweat.
The Flash has usable mesh side pockets that will fit nalgene bottles(even when pack is full) but if you bend over, sayonarra h2o.The Marmot has a mesh-zipper pocket that will fit a nalgene if pack is not too full.
The lid pocket on the Flash is better designed and can hold more.

So its a no brainer, right? The Flash wins.Wrong.The shoulder straps are about one third to half that of the Marmot and dig in to my traps. When i switch to the Marmot i feel relief.
However playing with the lift loaders seems to help a little on the Flash and after a while i start feeling a little digging with the Marmot as well.

Comfort is a personal thing and someone else may come to the exact opposite regarding the comfort of these packs.

If anybody has had a comfort issue with the Flash please let me know.

flash is 16 oz.,marmot is 12.

The foam backboard support in the Flash is a real pain in the ass to re-insert due to its rhombus shape.Almost impossible to do it properly.

Thanks. I'm thinking of getting a day pack to bring on hikes. I'm leaning towards a zpacks zero extra small but 100$ (with intnl shipping) is a bit steep for a ten liter bag. Id probably add bottle pockets on the sides and mesh on the front to maximize room inside but that brings the price even higher. Another way to go is just get an arc blast as a main pack, it weighs about what most daypacks weigh, not sure how well it compresses though.

I have the Kompressor Plus, weighs in at 12oz, 11oz if you remove the foam panel. Great, functional pack that I have seen no durability issues with so far, and I use it on the daily. Plus, it packs up into its own lid for easy storage.

Jason,do you pack it with much weight?do the shoulder straps dig into your shoulders?

I really wanted to like the Flash, due to the better lid and usable mesh side pockets. I had already ruled out the Kompressor since it didn't look like it had a good means to carry a water bottle or two.

However, I had the same problem with the shoulder straps on the Flash digging in as you did. After one 10-mile day hike with about a 10 pound load, I could barely raise my arms without wincing, so the pack went straight back to REI.

thanks for that report…the first 30 or so reviews of the flash on rei.com are glowing and then the last 20,the shoulder strap/discomfort reports start piling in.

Dave, I have carried this comfortably with around 15lbs in it. As long as it is packed and compressed properly, as to not have the lid sagging in, it rides perfectly. I also have not experienced any issue of the shoulder straps digging into my skin. They are rather comfortable for being so lightweight.

If you decide against the Flash 22, I'd take it off your shoulders. :)
