Unfortunate Sawyer Squeeze Update

Silly question (because you probably tried this) but are the two Platypus bags exactly the same? Platypus changed their threads on their bags (I forget when). As a result, some Platypus bags work fine, and others don't. As for me, I've given up and just use the Sawyer bag as my dirty bag, and a Platypus as my clean one (with a Tornado Tube setup when I drip). One advantage of this system is that I'm less likely to forget which bag is which and drink from a dirty bag. There is also less to clean after a day hike.

Yeah, I tried both to no avail. One of my friends actually drank water that had dirty water leaked into it (three gulps.) We're not worried, because our source was a mountain spring in northern Vermont, not likely to have anything serious in it. But you can never be too careful. He's fine two days later.

I love the filter, but I'm bummed this isn't compatible. Why not, I wonder?!

This happened to me a while back with the Sawyer Squeeze version 1.0.

I had initially had good luck using the squeeze filter with an old platypus bladder. I went so far as to use this set-up for several trips with no problems. Then, on the morning of day 2 during a quick overnighter, I suddenly could no longer get the platypus bladder to mate with the sawyer squeeze filter without leaking. I tried over and over but it kept on leaking.

I switched to using an Evernew bladder after that and haven't had any more problems.

I theorize that perhaps it was a fluke that the platypus bladder fit in the first place and maybe the threads were soft enough that after a few uses, the threading was shaved down just enough to no longer offer a tight seal.

I don't think it was shaving. Both look new and I didn't force it hard enough. Definitely the fluke part for me.

From what I can gather, it was Platypus that changed their threads. But I'm not sure about that, and it may actually depend on the type of Platypus (not just the year). Sawyer bags and filters match those from a soda pop (or water) bottle, which suggests that they are following a de facto standard (which is probably the best we can do). I'm not sure why Platypus bags are a little different or why any Platypus cap seems to fit any Platypus bag despite the difference. It may be that in the case of a cap, it doesn't matter so much, but in the case of a filter (where the water bottle is upside down and lots of pressure is being placed on the filter) things leak. In other words, it is possible that a mismatched cap for Platypus would cause a little leaking (dripping) if you turned the bag upside down and squeezed it a bit (and waited) but no one really does that.

As Sawyer becomes the standard for filters, I hope Platypus changes their threads to be more compatible. I prefer Platypus bags, and like it when companies focus on what they do best (Sawyer for filters, Platypus for bags).

I would also like it if Sawyer comes up with a replacement for the Tornado Tube. It seems silly to build your own when the company could make one themselves and sell it at a pretty good markup. The last step would be if they put holes in the corner of the bags themselves (so people like me don't have to do this step). I have a very light, very flexible drip system, but it seems silly that I had to build it myself.

Squeeze – 1/8"

Since it's plastic and bends, the Platypus sort of fits onto Squeeze. Also, there's only about one turn. Maybe if it's colder are warmer it will fit better or worse? Or it bends a little after using it some?

Same experience here. My old platypus seems to screw into the 2 year old Sawyer but it leaks.
