With the prices they want for most of the latest lightweight gear, I'm starting to think about getting a machine and make some of my own gear.

I don't think a tarp,bivy and syn. quilt would be too hard to make? Start with a tarp, then make a bivy, then finish with a quilt.

You could start with stuff sacks to perfect your sewing, then advance to the other gear.
