What four data field options do you have showing on your geko trip computer for backpacking? I was thinking elevation, heading, location, and next dist.

Those are good choices if you have waypoints previously entered. Bearing, Final xxx, Next xxx all require waypoints entered in advance. I keep Elevation, Heading, Location, and Bearing selected. I think Distance to Next could be misleading if the trail has switchbacks. The only Waypoints I set previously are watering points and Trailheads. If I find a nice campsite to come back to some day, I’ll mark that as well and store it on my computer.
