Hi,

Thanks for dropping in my fellow backpacking bretheren.

Here's what I have already. I have an old wool sweater that weighs 11.3 oz but doesn't have the greatest packability. I also have a paty micropuff vest that weighs around 7 oz.

What I will be probably be using for over/under layers with this garment:

lightweight synthetic tshirt
smartwool2 ls zip or EMS ls techwick
OR Ion or Paty Houdini

Choices I'm considering other than the fleece I own:

MontBell Thermawrap (2006) M on sale $110 ~8 oz.

MontBell Inner Down Jkt. (06) M $113 ~6-7 oz

Smartwool (women's) Spectra Hoodie L $72 ~9.5 oz

What do you guys think? I have a Columbia microfleece I was also considering taking as well. I will come back and edit in the weights of my fleeces and hoodie if I can find it.

I should note I'm on a budget but wouldn't mind buying a quality garment as an addition to my clothing system.

Thanks for any comments, recommendations, etc.!

Thought: is your sleep system down? if so you may want to go synthetic.

Have you tried on the montbell gear? my thermawrap is a large , fits fairly snugly and I'm not huge. I guess you can always return the medium if it's too small, provided you have the time to do so. $110 is a good price.

I have no experience with any of the other gear, so that's all I'll say.

Hi Jaiden,

Thanks for taking time to post. That's a good point as it is down. I've been leaning towards the thermawrap from the getgo. I'm 5'7", 145 lbs so I just assumed the medium would fit me?

I'd think you'd be OK with the medium. I'm 5'6 and thankfully am back to 178 after being as high as 195. Even at 195 there was plenty of room underneath for layering. You might also consider the micropuff (which I've not used) which is well reviewed and generally considered warmer (and heavier) than the thermawrap.

Here's a pic of me, at 195 this past fall in the large. Mine's "gunmetal" which my wife describes as "trash bag"…

What about a long sleeves shirt made of polartec polardry like the polos from Insport.
I use one for running during winter and even wet, I do not feel the cold…
