I've the Uniqlo UL Down Hoody and it performed well as an insulating layer under a light 2.5 layer rain jacket into the low 30's. Using it inside a primaloft one insulated jacket, I was able to take it down into the low teens. Base layers: light wool sweater, dress shirt, and an undershirt (Work), or a light powerstretch fleece & a long sleeve synthetic (on the mountain). For the price, it couldn't be beat. Though, there's a few things that always bothered me. It woud leak down fairly frequently, I always ended up with more than a few feathers on me, the unadjustable hood and the zipper is more or less broken and thus requires delicate handling.

I'm thinking of "upgrading", what do people think of the Patagucci UL Down hoody & the MH Ghost Whisperer?
Quality of the zipper?
Down leaks?
Warmth (the hood plays a huge factor)?
Fit? I tried on the UL down hoody this week and found that the sizing is odd. Usually I wear a small but the Patagucci was far too small and I to size up and it's a tad bit too big.
If it can be compared to the 7oz Uniqlo UL down jacket, that would be fantastic.

You can also try Montbell. They make great down jackets, etc. I had the Alpine Light, which ended up being way more down/insulation than I needed so got a Stoic Hadron down Anorak instead.

The down Stoic Hadron Anorak is hooded and has 2.3oz of 850FP down, and weighs less than 7oz for a small. They also have unhooded ones too. It's a pullover type with buttons. Great stuff. The cuffs are a bit tight though, but it's fine.

You can find then on geartrade.com for fairly cheap (under 100). There's a few threads on here from awhile back on the Hadrons.

Good deals there, plus, buying gently used stuff is super environmentally friendly.

Good luck finding one of these new in anything but a size large or xl.

+1 on the montbell

I couldn't find any of the stoic pull overs so I pretty much gave up on them. The Montbell jackets look promising as well. How do they compare to the Uniqlo, Patagucci & MH? The MB Ultralight also looks to be very well priced (even more so if i can find a 20% coupon).

Love my Ghost Whisperer, didn't get the hood though, bought a black rock down beany which lives in the zipped up pocket of the Ghost Whisperer. I find a hood stops me from hearing properly and the hood on my Houdini wind shirt is often all I need if things are getting chilly.

Both the Black Rock and the Ghost Whisperer are on the large size, I bought XL (I'm 100kgs, 1.8m) and would have preferred a large. The blackrock beany is probably warmer than a hood, it fits your head so well and pulls down over your ears if you need it, more temp control. No hood = greater choice of head gear too, wide brim in summer, and the beany at night/sleeping.

I use a silk scarf as a neck gaiter too(doubles as a towel/first aid sling). I use the Ghost Whisperer as a replacement for a polar tec top. Its a fraction of the weight and packs down to nothing.

Not that there aren't other good jackets out there, but Mont-Bell is the gold standard in ultralight down jackets IMO.

I had a montbell alpine lite and currently have a MH Ghost whisperer hooded, and Stoic hadron pullover hoody. i've played with the uniqlo at a store recently. it's most similar to the MH ghost but it has less down. the down feels of similar quality though.

The montbell alpine lite has way more down than the other two so it's probably better to compare the ultralite models to the MH, uniqlo, and stoic.

the Stoic is fine for how cheap it was, and it's my go to for most occasions, but it's not as warm as the other two but thats simply because it has less fill.
