I'm contemplating buying a water bottle with a built in filter. I have no good reason to do this other than the fact that it would be a new piece of gear. Last summer I hiked a bit with a guy who had one and I envied the ease with which he scooped up water, gulped down a liter, then refilled, and walked on with a liter for the road. Meanwhile, I had to sit, carefully measure out my AquaMira drop-by-drop, and then wait to drink. This gets old given I average 7-9 liters a day.

So… I figure this might be nice paired with my powerade bottle and AquaMira.

What are your opinions/experiences with these systems?

An unbelievable amount of water to drink in a day!
In hot weather (in hot Australia) I might drink 2 L in a day.

Cheers

My response is directed at the "(or similar bottle w/ filter)" aspect of your thread title…

One of the popular ones out there is the Katadyn bottles. I have their purification bottle and can't recommend it for backpacking. Drinking water through it is too much of a chore. They have a filtration options which I haven't tried yet.

My new favorite is just putting a plain ol' Sawyer Squeeze filter on a PET bottle. The vacuum lock isn't that big of a deal imo. When I'm filling someone else's bottle, I just partially loosen the filter to re inflate the bottle. I only have to do that a few times to filter a liter of water.

I like that the filter is on rather than in my bottle so it doesn't reduce my carrying capacity.

@Ian – thanks!

@Roger
– 2 liters!? At home in the SF Bay Area I drink 2-3 a day and on the trail in the high Sierra, hiking 9-18 mpd w/a 27lb pack, I average close to 8 liters. Interesting, eh?
