Water collecting on the top toward the rear.

Hi all,

I've been spending time at my parents lake house in central KY, where we've had an a lot of rain over the past couple days. Given the weather, and the time to pay attention, I decided to set up both a 15 year old Moss Little Dipper and a one month old Tarptent Rainshadow 2, to observe how they can handle the water.

After several hours of sustained rain, my Moss tend started leaking in a couple spots. Given the age of the tent, and never having sealed its seams (old Moss tents didn't require it, due to their thread), this was not a complete surprise to me.

Surprisingly, though, the Rainshadow 2 has a specific spot on the ridge of the fly, about a foot up from the rear hooped pole. It appears as though there is a slight "fold" in the fabric, right next to one of the two ridge seams. The water puddles here, and makes its way into the tent.
I will add extra seam sealant here, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove this spot? Do other Rainshadow owners have this issue in their tent?

Thanks much,

Matt

P.S. it's amazing to think both these tents are three person tents, but one is FIVE TIMES HEAVIER than the other (sigh.)

Hi Matt,
You have there two separate problems, both easy to fix

That silnylon can hold gallons of water without leakage, so as you have already determined some of the seams need to be re-done.
Don't feel bad about it because having done over 200 tents that still happens to me too. (just a missed millimeter or two will do it…)*

The second "problem" is simply fabric tension.
On the right end side of the rear pole (looking towards the front) there is a ladder lock to pull the fabric into tension.
RSII ladder lock
When the fabric cools down it will stretch so you need to pull it in a bit more.
That way you avoid the sagging bit.
Should look like this :

I have some set up tips in my RSII video clip :

*However it usually works . Here is a recent comment on "my work" :
"By the way, Tarptent DR did well in Indonesia, tropical rain and all.'
