I've put together a number of sleeping options and wanted to get feedback from people who may have tried some this before. I have yet to try any of these out in real conditions so I'm looking for experience.

Here's what I've got with weights meaured on my scale:

Feathered Friends Lark (10*) – 32 ounces
Western Mountaineering Summerlite (32*) – 19 ounces
Enlightened Equipment Quilt (30*) – 19 ounces with straps
Enlightened Equipment Summer Quilt (45*) – ~18 ounces
Titanium Goat Omni Bivy – 7.9 ounces
Neoair xTherm regular – 17.8 ounces

I planned on using the 30* quilt as an overbag for my Lark or Summerlite to really bring down the temp rating. I custom ordered the size to fit around the Lark without compressing the down. I'm sure the summer quilt (just ordered) will work that way although it could be a bit smaller in dimensions and won't drop the temp nearly as much. I'd guess it won't compress as much as the down quilt either.

I would have to guess the 30* quilt and Lark along with the bivy and xTherm would drop the temp well below zero approaching -10* F. I don't expect to use this option much with when packing. I'd guess the summer quilt and Summerlite would get me to 20* F but that's gonna be 2 lbs. 5 oz. I could get a nice 20* bag and save nearly 12 ounces off that total weight.

I'm curious how cold people here think various combinations of bags above will give me and whether I'd be better suited with just adding a 20* bag. My main uses for this gear is when hunting which includes packing in and out (hopefully carry way more weight on the way out) so weight is a serious consideration.

Thanks for any feedback/suggestions!

Hi Bt,

I think the Lark and your 30f quilt would get you to -10f, but you will need extra head I insulation.

The Lark is a great bag bags I used one for a a while.

I recently purchased a 50f Syn quilt to go over my 20f WM bag and Tim Marshall thinks it will go to 5f, but as I sleep cold I am thinking more like 15f. I did push my 20f bag to -13f with down clothing earlier this year but I left no margin for error.

I would be weary of the Summerlite in winter due to the lack of draft collar.

The use of bags or quilts without draft collars or hoods is fine if you wear a puffy hooded sweater when you sleep.
In fact I find the combination of a Summerlite and a light puffy down hooded sweater to outperform my previous 20 degree hooded with draft collar bag.

It is more important to keep your core and head warm and less so your legs and feet.

I find that my legs and feet will be warm if my upper body is warm, even if I have much less insulation on my lower body.
There is a lot of scientific data to prove this.

You know the saying "If your feet are cold, put on a hat" (or what ever it is).

I've never slept in a bag with extra clothing but it sure sounds like I need to try that.

Thanks for the feedback.
