I ran across a cool idea for a combined windscreen and stand for an alcohol stove and wanted to share it with you all. You can find illustrations and the source for the idea HERE.
I’d use something lighter than rain gutter nails for the cross beams but nevertheless, an interesting idea for those using small beer can pots or mugs.
I went to HyVee and found the same can but not as a Nesquik can but as Nestle Carlos V (a hot chocolate mix – labeled in Spanish). Unaltered (with the label removed) the very sturdy metal can weighs 2.65 oz, if you’d want the lid for packing/organization it weights an additional 0.2 oz. Not ultralight, but certainly lighter than other more traditional windscreen, bottom reflector, stand combinations.
The dimensions of the can are 4 inches external diameter, 3 – 3/8 inches internal diameter, and 4 inches tall. I was disappointed that my 24 oz Heineken can was just slightly too big for the can. From the pictures in the above link, it appears the author removed the top (heavy) part of the can, which would increase the internal diameter and further decrease the weight. Alternatively, I wonder if this could be used for both an alcohol stove and also as a miniature wood burning stove?
