I'm wanting to do Denali next on my list and looking to buy cold weather gear. I own a Western mountaineering highlite 35degree bag which I love at 15ounces. REI sells a nice -20d down bag for around $300 and with 20% off is very reasonable.
However, I doubt I'll ever use the -20d bag again unless I do everest and in that case I'll need a -40d bag. Do people on everest ever double up and layer sleeping bags and using my 35degree bag inside the -20d bag a reasonable replacement for a -40degree bag? Of course, if I buy a -40degree bag, after my everest trip, I'll probably never use it again so seems a waste of $600-800.
Is it relatively inexpensive to rent -20d or -40d sleeping bags for several weeks for an expedition?
