MYOG Poncho or umbrella for child/toddler?

For those parents out there who backpack with their young children (<3 yrs old), what kind of solution have you come up with for raingear?

My thought was to make a simple poncho out of silnylon and a a hat to keep the rain off her head. Or would we be better taking something like a GoLite Chrome Dome?
