That section burned badly several years ago, starting just south of the river. This fire must be at the other end – past the fire station and the campground.

Perhaps you have a better view of the fire from Oregon Bob. :)

No. It's about 2 miles due north of segment 2 by the intersection of Foxton and River roads. Or 5 miles from my house. So I have a pretty good idea of where it is. The C-130's flying over after making their drops as we were loading the vehicles with our mementos and pets gave a pretty good clue as to where it was. Luckily, the winds have died down so hopefully they will get it under control soon.

It appears to be west of the sw end of section 1 , west of the reservoir, and north of the east end of section 2. So much for my original intentions this weekend!

Now there's a fire near Strontia Springs reservoir in segment 1 and in Black Canyon near the end of segment 4.

Edit: Had my TH's confused. It's past Long Gulch TH in segment 5.

From the CTF Facebook page today:

"BUMMER, WATERTON CANYON CLOSED AGAIN – Rapidly changing fire conditions this Monday June 24 3:30 Mountain Time. Another fire (new, still small) has started near Strontia Springs Reservoir, midway CT Segment 1. (Check & recheck the official Waterton web page below for closure info.) – http://www.denverwater.org/Recreation/WatertonCanyon/ BEST BET (AGAIN) IS TO START AT SEGMENT 3 LITTLE SCRAGGY TRAILHEAD. Though Segment 2 is open, Foxton Rd, County Rd 96/97, is still restricted to residents only, so you cannot currently drive to the east end of Segment 2."

and from another poster to the CTF page today:

"There is a five acre fire at the end of 4, start of 5. My son and friend were just picked up there by the local police and taken to a safe spot!"

With all the current and potential fires, 2013 is turning out to be a bad year to hike either the CT or the CDT in CO.

I've already cancelled my trek. There's just too much uncertainty to invest that much time and money.

That's the Black Canyon fire I mentioned above. It's in Lost Creek Wilderness. Let's hope they get that under control fast. It will be difficult because they have to hike in to fight it. But they will have helicopter support.

The east segments that were closed by fire are all open. (There are closures in 21-24.) The firefighters have been doing an unbelievable job of handling the large number of fires that have occurred this year. I'm thankful for all the homes they have saved and, for selfish reasons, I'm particularly grateful to the group that put out the fire in Lost Creek Wilderness. Even though they'll never see it here, I tip my floppy sun hat to them.
