I was thinking of picking up the set of odor proof bags from lite-trail to line my bear bag. The bag liner weighs in at 0.45 oz I believe. The advantage of using this liner is that I could take thinner food storage bags (1 mil) and in the event of a leak, I would be OK.

Combining this bag with a HMG X-Large cuben fiber stuff sack at 0.5 oz would give me around 1.0 oz for the whole system (sans bear bagging line and carbiner). The only concern is that with a drawcord design, water might leak while it is hanging. Thoughts?

I like Z Packs food blast bag with the roll top closure, you can buy his whole system or the bag separately.Or if you want something lighter and waterproof you might look at these they also work well and you can find them on sale a lot.You can look at Sticks system here .

Hi Anna,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had actually considered the ZPacks food bag before, but at 1.4 oz it would be a little "heavy" (just as heavy, if not heavier, than my Sea to Summit dry bags). I'm trying to find a lighter bag that will allow me to incorporate the litetrail bag liner to odor proof and waterproof my food bag, all under 1 oz. Is this possible?

I've been eyeing the Granite Gear uberlight series of dry bags. Does anyone know if they are durable enough to hang 10 lbs of food/kit in them off a tree? They are thin, but hopefully no tree dwelling animal would be attracted to it if I used the odor proof liner.

The 13L version weighs in at 0.67 oz. Rather expensive, though.

If you are interested in the uberlight bags I know where to get them for 20% off.

I have been using the GG Uberlight 10L bag as my food bag for a while now. I line the inside with the LiteTrail NyloBarrier bags, for a total weight of 0.9 oz. For trips 3 days or less, this has been my go-to food bag set-up. For trips longer, or if I am just carrying more food I go with my ZPacks Blast food bag and a cut down LiteTrail Pack Liner (made from the same NyloBarrier material).

I would guess that the GG bagas are made from around 0.5 oz/sqyd cuben. They are completely taped/bonded. With use I have found a single small hole in the side of the bag (likely from the hard edges of the Packit Gourmet meals), which I fixed with a short piece of the single sided cuben tape from ZPacks. I just rounded the corners and it patched it up just fine. Other than this I do worry about the clip holding in the bag when hanging it full (around 8 lbs max, but more often 6 lbs or less).

I like this set-up, but once this one wears out, I don't see myself replacing the GG bag with another one. Instead, I will just pick up the medium dry sack from ZPacks. These use 1 oz/sqyd cuben and are considerably tougher, don't really weigh much more (0.85 vs 0.5) and are less expensive.

Chad,

Do you think the Zpacks stuff sacks are waterproof? My concern with the drawstring closure is that if it were on the top, water might leak in.

I just weighed my Sea to Summit silnylon bag and it weighs in at 27.88 g, just under 1 oz. It has a drawstring closure but a hang loop on the bottom side which makes it nice for hanging upside down. Haven't tested it to see if the seams are completely waterproof, though.

The medium stuff sack Stick is talking about is taped ,waterproof and has a roll top closure but the draw string stuff sack will allow water in through the top,He talks about it in this post on his blog and why he switched to a roll top closure.
