I used to use Weber Fire Cubes in my 3-season cookset:
http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=49519

But they are getting more difficult to use, and I have moved to only a hot dinner each day, so no need for the slightly heavier cubes as compared to the Coughlan's fuel tablets.

The problem with the Coughlan's is that they are not individually wrapped so once they are opened, they start to dry out. Well I got out the saran wrap and a bit of clear packing tape this evening and made these little candies:

I will check them next week to see if they have dried out. I am leaving on a week long AT section hike and I want to see how they perform after being wrapped before my trip.

Good idea, can't see why they will dry out. They should be good to go. How long a burn time for each?

Take some 2" clear packaging tape and lay it down sticky side up. Place fuel tabs onto center of tape spaced 2" apart. Take another length of tape and place over the tabs to sandwich them between the two layers of tape. Press tape around the tabs for a tight seal. Sounds good on paper:-) might work. Cut them apart or let them stay on a strip.

They burned for 10min with ideal conditions (in my kitchen). That was until they were out, but the last minute or two there was reduced flame. The Weber cubes burn longer (generally enough to boil enough water to make single serve dinner and then enough to warm oatmeal in the morning…but I don't need/want the warm breakfast these days so hopefully the COughlan's will fit the bill.

The double wrap tape map work as well. Prob weigh a smidge more, but be more robust as the saran wrap I have isn't exactly robust.

10 min. sounds good. I'm going to try some. I can't stand the smell of Esbit. How does the Coughlan's smell? I use Weber's for campfire starters and love how they burn.

2" wide blue painters tape should work well also. The tape itself might burn well. Light the edge to ignite the cube. I think this tape will stretch better around the cube.

I read about them smelling like shrimp but perhaps they have changed their formula, no smell at all. My wife would of let me know. Haha.

Is painters tape water/relatively air tight?

The painters tape is water resistant. I use it to temporarily seal the seams on the hinged top of my small utility trailer that I use for car camping gear. Used it last week and the tape survived highway travel in the rain. I'll get some Cog tabs today and try them taped with the painters and the packaging tape. Good experiment.

We can both check back on if they keep sealed well.

Please time how long they burn when u first get them before and after being sealed. I was just glancing at the kitchen clock, nothing scientific.

Here's another way to store and carry the Coghlan's fuel tablets–a screw-top plastic bottle used to store a roll of quarters. 5 tabs will fit perfectly inside this 11 gram container. It's essentially waterproof. By the way, my Coghlan's tablets don't don't smell at all like Esbit.

Looks like a good solution for sturdy storage. Being the gram weenie I am, I'm going to try and rock the saran wrap for now, but if it proves too fragile will check out the container. Thx.

I also keep one of those bottles, full of quarters, in my glove box. Never know when I might want to hit the car wash or a laundromat.

Do they rattle inside or tight/silent fit?

Gary Dunckel BPL Member

When full (5 tabs) there's 2 mm of space between the top tablet and the cap. So not much rattling at all. Of course, things change when you use a tab or two, but nothing that a small piece of tissue or a bit of paper towel won't solve. Use a tab, add some tissue.

What about the sides of the container, how snug are the tablets in there as opposed to space at the top?

Snug, a perfect fit. Place one of your tablets on top of a quarter, and you'll see what I mean.

These look great Bryce.

I use the Coughlans and Stansport solid fuel (They seem to be identical) because they are the easiest to get around here. I've noticed no difference at all in the smell of them and Esbit brand. They all have the "old fish" smell. I've been putting stacks of 6 or so in a ziplock snack bag and rolling them up tight. This seems to deal with the smell and keeps them from drying but I like the individual wrap that you've done.

Even if they do dry out over time, it won't likely happen before your hike next week.

Those bottles look like a good way to store them also Gary. I'm surprised that your Coughlins tablets don't smell like Esbit though. Mine seem to smell just like it. I may pull them out again and compare (I've never deliberately smelled them one right after the other).

Looking carefully at the packaging my Coghlans tabs come in there are small holes in the plastic wrapper anyway. They are not sealed in an air tight container even when new. So I don't think it's necessary to stop them from "drying out".

Seemed a little longer to light than before, but lighted right up after 2 seconds of flame from the lighter and burned for ~10min until flame was completely out. So wrapping at least doesn't seem to hurt. :p

I have some nice plastic canisters that fit the Caughlan's tablets. I had to order the tablets online, could not find them locally. The containers have foam discs that compress on top and uder the tablets to keep them from rattling and breaking while in storage. Will try to get a photo today. My tablets smell just like Esbit.

The container is made of a pliable plastic which allows it to have an attached lid that seals tight the contents. The contain comes with 4 foam pieces about the same size as the tablets. With 4 tablets in the container, 2 foam pieces can be compressed to fit also for protecting contents top and bottom.

I found them on ebay. I bought them for a lightweight sunglasses project that never flew. Tomorrow I'll see if i can find the receipt.

Go to your local pharmacy and kindly ask for a few of the skinny prescription bottles. They have a short size and a taller one depending on how many Coghlan tabs you want to carry. They fit perfectly and the bottles are waterproof too.

Dan, those containers look very lightweight. Link?

The quarter containers look good too, and they fit 5.
