Im heading out and and thinking about switching out my long johns(polartec mid weight leggings) for rain pants.

Its a short trip and I dont think there will be rain but was thinking that this might be a good way to not realy save weight but be more prepaired with the weight im am carrying. Plus these have the added benifit of being wind pants as well.

What do you guys think?

ps. I dont proof read my post anymore sorry…

based on what you've said so far. Rain pants work for rain, wind, and add considerable warmth. More than once I've even worn dry rain pants in my sleeping bag for additional warmth.

One thing to consider is not getting your regular pants and your rain pants wet at the same time unless your bag/quilt is warm enough. When it's raining wear your rain pants without the convertibles. That night wear your dry convertibles in your bag. Under normal conditions wear your convertible pants for walking. If it's cold sitting around camp or taking a break on a windy ridge, wear both.

Josh, would you still be carrying long pantsconvertibles? Or just rain paints only. I have given up on hiking pants and carry 150 merino long johns and rain paints only (plus shorts). I never considered giving up long johns in shoulder seasons. They weigh less than hiking pants and I wear them as a barrier between my bag and down mat.

I actually am not a big fan of convertible pants any more. I find that they just don't fit me that well. so I wear pants and was thinking I could wear the rain pants over them when the sun goes down and it gets cooler. and then sleeping in them would keep any dirt I have on me off the sleeping bag, though admittedly I usually just go to bed dirty and don't care.
