I’ve heard lots of experience about folks wearing so-called “Pertex & Pile” garments next to skin, but adoption of this approach in North America has focused primarily on using a Marmot Driclime wind shirt as a second layer over a base layer.
I’ve used a lot of similar garments worn next to skin – what I’d classify as “Pertex & Microfibre Pile” – like the Driclime, Patagonia Zephur, Rab Trail Top and Rab Trail Smock, and the Buffalo Teclite Activity Shirt.
This winter I’ve been spending more time experimenting with real pile next to skin, like the Patagonia MixMaster Jacket.
I’m wondering if anyone might have some experience with P&P garments (microfibre or real pile) in the winter, would really like to hear you share your experiences with them, and you incorporate them into your layering systems with other garments.
Bottom line: does the use of a P&P garment in your winter layering system save you weight in your pack?
