Hi Everyone,

Well, I'd like to buy a roomy double wall two person tent, with entrances on either side. The Tarptent Stratospire 2 seems like a good option. When you do the math, that tent (with seam sealing, shipping, and California sales tax) will cost almost $400. This makes me think that it might be worth coughing up a bit more for something similar in form but made of cuben fiber in order to save weight. Can anyone recommend (from personal experience) a suitable cuben fiber alternative to the TT Stratospire 2?

Thanks,

rhz

I don't have personal experience with it, but you might search archives for comments on Six Moon Designs Haven and associated Nettent. Total weight for cuben version is around 26oz plus stakes. Similar to SS2 in that it's large and has dual entries and is an outer with inner nettent.

I've got a cuben SMD Haven (270g/9.25oz in original cuben stuff sack) + the nettent (432g/15.3oz in original netting stuff sack). I got 6 titanium pegs for it at a total of 36g (1.1oz in a snap lock bag). So total weight with pegs is 738g (26.0oz).

The tarp and nettent both pack down very small. I always walk with a friend, so we split the weight. The nettent just fits in two large guys (who have to be good friends!). It's fairly quick to put up, which is important for me as I often get in camp at dusk and am bone tired. Only thing I don't like about it, is the stand-off height of the tarp bottom from the ground. It's fairly substantial and that makes for a very airy tent, and I'm a cold body. But, I realise if the stand-off height was less, it would weigh a heap more!

I'm also not sure it would shed wind as well as the Stratospire 2, but where I camp is pretty sheltered.

For anything to actually be an alternative, it must be available.

You can have a shelter custom made quicker than wait for some vendors to replenish items on their websites.

Rafi
IF the Strato Spire II was avaliable in Cuben it would be about $300 more and you would save about this much :
