MountainProject.com
If you are new to climbing, don't take mountain project as representative of the climbing community. Unfortunately, along with an abundance of useful info, MP has more than its share snickering & machismo BS. Turns out most climbers are pretty nice in person. Honestly, besides route beta, I avoid MP for the icky feeling it gives me about cyber-humans….sorry for the tangent.
thanks for the heads up… I am familiar with the testosterone crazed climbing scene…. just looking for some info pm gear… and expect to sort the wheat from the chaff..

…meant to add something constructive too:
http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/
is good for general alpinism and gear nerdery.
is a good online forum as well. Usually posing your question to The Google will direct you to a thread from MP, CC or a related blog.
Enjoy the climbing!
I'd second Coldthistle as a great site for some gear nerdery…although Dane (the primary author) tends to focus on cold weather gear alpine gear more than anything (great for a desert rat like myself who doesn't get to test that kind of gear much!).
While I'm not part of cascade climbers (or any climbing forum for that matter) I found the posts on that site to be somewhat similar in analytical depth to what you get from BPL. Especially for gear and technique breakdowns.
If you are REALLY desperate you can try rockclimbing.com but 9 out of 10 posts will be people that want to make fun of how dumb you are.

If you are in Calif, Supertopo.com
For non-Calif stuff, mountainproject.com
just talk about it here …
youll probably get better responses than some of those sites ;)
Exactly, plenty of climbers on these forums with plenty of gear knowledge.
I have started a new thread before, but can't seem to find how to do it again. What's the secrete? Where do I go on this web site to do it?
thanks,
bill
go to what ever section you what to start a thread in like GEAR and at the top of the page click on Create a New Thread.
