I'm overhauling almost all of my gear this year and feeling the pinch. I'm looking for a lightweight 30* sleeping bag. I'm 6'3" tall and have a 61+" shoulder girth which greatly restricts my choices. For example, I tried the Marmot Plasma and couldn't zip up the bag over my shoulders much less try to sleep in it with a down jacket. I realized later that the long size bag has a slightly wider shoulder circumference but not enough to merit consideration.
I'm currently using a 30 oz USGI Patrol Bag with the zipper/draft tube removed. This system will take me down to the high 30s before I have to put on a jacket so I'm not necessarily in a rush to replace it. If money was no object, I'd buy the Mont Bell U.L. Super Spiral Down Hugger #3 as it seems to have all of the features I'm looking for.
Right now Backcountry.com has the long Stoic Somnus 30* bag on sale for $159 but they didn't post the specs. After reading the end user reviews, it seems to be roomy but the weight is debatable. A couple reviewers are saying that this bag weighs 1lb 7oz and others are saying 1lb 10 oz.
The only BPL thread I could find on this generation Somnus, the person was quoted a weight over 2lbs but they did not have the bag to check for themselves. Hopefully they received bad information.
I chatted with a Backcountry.com rep and they could not provide me with the specs.
So, does anyone here have this bag and what do you think of the size, weight, and overall quality? I'm not expecting a Mont Bell or Western Mountaineering quality bag at that price but I don't want to waste my money either.
