Hello,

I've been a fan of my torso length blue foam pad but I know many people like the Gossamer Gear ThinLight pads. What are the differences? Weight, insulation, etc …
Thanks,

My ThinLight 3/8" pad weighs 6.3 oz.; a standard Coleman 3/8" camp pad weighs 11.9 oz. My ThinLight 1/8" weighs 2.5 oz, and I find it to be sufficient insulation. You could use the ThinLight 1/8" and add a GG NightLight Torso (3.4 oz) and have more padding (where it counts) for half the weight of the Coleman pad.

I'm finding I need a bit more padding for ground sleeping, but I'm still going to bring the ThinLight 1/8" in addition to an inflatable torso pad. It rolls down fairly small and gives shape to my pack.

Hi Douglas,

The blue foam pad I use is an REI one. The torso length weights about 3.5 oz.

That's not so bad, then. I only had the Coleman. I'm not sure how much difference there is between the foam REI uses and Evazote. However, if you want to add a bit of body-length insulation, the GG ThinLight 1/8" (2.5 oz) is a lightweight way to do that. Does the rest of your body lie directly on your ground cloth?

I throw my pack under my legs. It's not much insulation but a little better than directly on the ground cloth.

The weight for equiv thickness is very similar. The thinlight will be more durable and last longer. The thinlight provides approx 30% more insulation / weight (R 2.27 -vs- 1.6).

Thanks Mark that is exactly what I was wondering. Any chance you could point me to where you got those numbers?
Thanks,
