I am traveling with no stove and low food (I'll hitch at every opportunity is plan for the third time doing PCT section so not hauling a ton of food).

Primary question- what is absolute lightest bear canister?

2- Am I crazy or should I carry bigger canister bc reapply to hard (I can bear w little food for a while)?

3- Small bonus is if I can sit on canister?

You don't say how many days you want to go on a single canister so the question is hard to answer. Did you mean the WHOLE 2 weeks on one canister? Or did you mean the opposite – that you will get resupplied a lot? The "absolute lightest canister" would most likely be the smallest but I'm not sure this is what you are talking about.

That said, per unit volume, the Berikades are the lightest I think (also by far the most expensive). These also have the advantage that in addition to the 3 "standard" sizes they sell, because of the simple design you can also get a custom one with virtually any length/volume you would like. If weight is the only factor (not cost) then I'm thinking one of thee will be the best. The smallest is the scout (1 lb 12 oz), and they don't get smaller options because the bear is not suppose to be able to carry it.

Take a look at their site, and then think carefully what you want to do.

Another option – the bear vault solo is a little smaller and a litter heavier, but a lot cheaper. Lots of people, including me, also find them a lot more annoying to open at the end of a long day.

p.s. I think you can sit on all of the canisters. LOL

The lightest bear canisters are the Bearikades, and you can sit on them. The next lightest are the Bear Vaults, and you can sit on them. The god-awful heaviest are the Garcias, and you can sit on them.

If you find one you can't sit on, you've found one that Yogi and Boo Boo can open right up!

I know you asked about a bear canister, but have you considered an Ursack. They are much lighter than a canister and legal in many areas in the Sierra. Some might argue they are not as effective as a canister, but used properly, they are very effective.

Also the Bearicade has a great rental program that may make it more affordable.

"Mark, yes the Bear Vault's can be a pain to open, unless you know this trick"

So that's why I saw that bear in line at the DMV! Sweet trick.

That seems like a cool option. I guess the bears in Yosemite smart than the average?
