Hello. I would like to expand my knowledge of food protection gear and methods. I under that certain areas (particularly in CA) require bear canisters. This is straightforward… I can buy or rent one.

But what about about cases where a bear canister is not required? When should one use an Ursack type of device? And are there cases where no food protection is needed? Would love to learn more!

oh boy, a hornets nest of a question.

Do a search on BPL for Ursack, PCT bear hang, and counter balance hang. It will bring up lots of threads and some articles. Then after you have read the gazillion words on the subject, come back and ask any further questions you may have.

This… also, if if there are NO bears and you're CERTAIN of it there are other animals that may come sniffing around. Raccoons, boar, etc.

Probably best to keep your food away from your tent.

I don't have a choice because there are bears where I camp.

I dual use my "protection". I leave my food within site with a bell on it. When the bell goes off, it's time to defend the food.

In bear country I use a bearikade.
