I've gotten away with permethrin in the ADK's at times by spraying my hammock and the bugs left me alone for the most part.

I'm wondering how bad the bugs will be in the lower part of the Long Trail in VT this weekend and if I can save some weight, or I need some sort of netting to get a decent night's sleep? Is bug netting a must? Thx.

Hey Bryce, I'm not in Vermont but I know the White mountains in New Hampshire and out here in Maine are starting to get buggy. The black flies and mosquitoes are getting to be a nuisance during the day but in the evening when the temperature drops they are almost non-existant. Watch the forcast, if it's going to be a chilly night (40's) you'll probally be OK.

I would personally bring the netting just for a nice refuge in the early evening at camp and if I was sleeping in a bit past sunrise.

Hi Bryce,

This is the worst time of year for bugs in Vermont. Remember how bad you got bit up in Harrman? It can be much worse on the Long Trail, but no worse than the ADK.

I never had much success using Permethrin as a bug repellent, but others say it works.
I have watched mosquitoes try to bite me through permethrin treated clothes.

At what temps do the bugs "go away?" With lows in the mid to upper 30s, I figure the bugs won't be out at night (granted it will be 38F at 3am, not 10:30 when I go to bed)?

I think you'll be fine when the temps are in the 40's or even the 50's.

I do remember a few times, in various places where there was snow on the ground and the biting flies were swarming until dark.
But, your correct, now that I think of it, it shouldn't be an issue when sleeping at night.

Always a game of how much weight/gear u can leave at home vs. not getting the job done. Because of the bug bites I received during our hike I'll never wear short sleeve again, ever. Haha.

Definitely want bug protection on the LT this time of year. It rained a bunch this week as well, so swarms of mosquitos, AND black flies…AT THE SAME TIME
