I’m looking for hiking pants for my wife. I could use some recommendations. It looks like REI has a good deal on these. Anyone use them?

…he just might know.
I've never seen those before, but wow buying pants for a woman is a horrific proposition. I can barely do it for myself, let alone have someone do it for me.
The only convertibles I have even remotely found comfortable and wearable are the Mountain Hardware Ramesa pants. I really like the way those fit me. I also was lucky enough to grab a pair of arcteryx rampart pants on sale at Moosejaw…and I have to say they are probably my absolute most favorite pants I've ever worn. I even wear those darned things to work!! They are great…
I have tried sooooo many adventure pants and I must say its almost as hard as picking a bathing suit each year. So good luck with that!!
have you thought of shorts instead? They are genrally easier to fit than pants, and a lot cooler to wear. For some reason, long pants are constructed with more varieation in the waist to hip ratio and in the rise measurement, which makes them harder to fit than shorts becaue they are so particular.
Don't do it! As the ladies have mentioned it's a fool's errand no matter how thoughtful. I went through a figurative hell just helping my girlfriend find a winter softshell pant she can wear (OR Circques have made her a happy camper). So I thought I was "golden" in figuring out what her pant sizes were. Got her a pair of GoLite siskiyou's and lo and behold they're great except the rise is weird and therefore unwearable.
It basically sounds like there is so much variation in women when it comes to their lower half measurements that pant fit is like playing roulette. Add to that that the fit and tailoring can make a 40yo look like either a co-ed aged ski bunny or a professional women's rugby…it's incredibly difficult to "win" with a pants purchase. (As opposed to how a guy doesn't look that much different between wearing baggy or trim pants).
I will say for anyone (male or female) who seems hard to fit for clothes, Arc'teryx has a tendency to fit perfectly. They fill a niche between the huskier population and the emaciated population…you know that group of athletic individuals that outdoors folks tends to fall into. They're just pricey unless you get them on sale.
Tangentially: I have a pair of NWT golite siskiyou pants in XS if you're interested ;)

A man of experience has spoken. Buy a gift card. Buying clothes for women is usually a lose-lose situation.
