I have one of the earlier Jam2's, circa 2008; they only came in one size then. I can fit a BV-500 in the bottom of this pack horizontally. Granted, it is a snug fit but it is a fit. Unless they changed the proportions of the pack since I bought mine, the bear can should fit the larger 70 liter pack as well.

I'm borrowing a BV500 from another member and it will fit horizontally in the 2012 Jam 70L. Don't know how well it carries yet. As for how the Jam carries a load in general, there are several other threads on it in the past year. Should be fine for anything under 25 if packed decently. You could manage 35 in pinch if packed very well though I'd augment the suspension personally (add additional foam, corrugated plastic or some other lightweight stay).

I used to use an even bigger Garcia can with my really old c. 2003-4 Jam. Eventually switched to something with a frame when using a bear can. If you can magically get the bear can horizontal and exactly in the small of you back it might be ok. Or it could also be murder. I can tell you that before giving up on the Jam for this purpose I had settled on vertical on top of my bag, with my foam pad on the outside burrito style.
