I’ve had the piscifun carbon x 500 out enough to know I really like it.

Thanks for the head’s up on the Piscifun reel Bob B. Great reviews everywhere, and about impossible to beat that weight. I just scored one on sale at Amazon for $47.50. We’ll see what I think…

So I used the Piscifun reel this week on a highcountry backpack. It handled this 15″ Rainbow with ease. Great little reel. Nice thing, apart from its weight, is how small it breaks down.

Wow nice fish!

Also a belated “happy 10th anniversary” to this thread. Back in 2013 I picked up the Quantum rod & reel combo Mike was recommending on page 1. It served me well for 5 years before getting broken in a canoeing mishap.

Almost 2 years later and resurrecting the thread again. My piscifun 500 is on the way, and I have an old Sports Authority telescoping rod to pair it with. Now lets talk tackle. As a fairly inexperienced angler, what are people using for alpine streams and lakes and what’s been everyones lightweight tackle box solution?

I always used the tiniest spinners I could find. Mepps, rooster tails and the like.

I recommend a four piece 6′-6″ Light or Med/Light graphite rod. It packs small (under 22″), and is light while still offering excellent all-around performance for highcountry fish. I use a Piscifun Carbon X 500 series reel loaded with 6lb line. The only two lures I’ve ever needed here in Montana are a Panther Martin No.2 and a Rooster Tail 1/8 oz. I could get by with just the Rooster Tail. I have never found the need to carry more than four spinners, a few backup split shot sinkers, and swivel snaps. With a custom DCF rod sleeve, reel/gear bag, and Derma-Safe knife, the whole kit is under 10 oz’s.
