I just ordered a Mariposa Plus for myself after emailing back and forth with Grant from Gossamer Gear.
Grant assured me that the pack was specifically designed for my base weight of 10-12 pounds, and would be comfortable with the 20-25 pound total weights that I typically carry.
Grant had a few other good suggestions for the Mariposa Plus:
– He suggested that using the 9"x19" Sitlight pad in the backpanel (1.5 ounces) would allow the pack to carry closer to your back.
– Grant said that the 29"x19" Nightlight torso would provide more cushion and put the pack further off your back while providing for dual use. Their torso length pad is pre-scored to fold up to a three-layer 9"x19" size.
– He indicated that a partially inflated 20" thermarest-style pad will also work for a backpanel.
– Grant said that custom curved stays could be made out of aluminum stock or aluminum arrow shafts. The stays provided are straight and made of carbon fiber. Apparently GG is working on a curved stay option, but Grant said that they are not ready yet. [Curved stays were something that I inquired about to help fit and load transfer.]
I ordered an assortment of the convoluted Nightlight pads with my pack. I intend to experiment with a variety of backpanel cushion options and maybe some custom stays in order to maximize the comfort and load transfer of what is already touted as a very comfortable pack. I will try to post a detailed review in the user reviews section once I've had a chance to try it out a bit.
Also, Gossamer Gear is apparently VERY fast at filling orders. I placed my order on Tuesday and it should be here by the end of the week with standard shipping!
