I'd never thought about putting an MP3 player in here but here would be an interesting take to it:

I have one of these and the sound quality is surprisingly good for an all-in-one solution. I've never weighted it but it would definitely be scant. As a bonus, it's waterproof (I bought them for lap swimming). The downside is that it's rechargeable via USB but there are quite a few options to make that work (AAA-to-USB charger–solar, if you carry a cell phone…etc)

With only 10 hours of play time, that would just be extra weight after about the second day or so. I can get close to twenty hours on one lithium AAA battery in the T60, and another battery is only 1/3oz. Used it on the JMT last year and went though about 3 or 4 batteries for the whole trail.

RCA makes mp3 players that run on a single AAA batteries for about half that price.
I get about 20 hours run time or more if used intermittently.
Available at Walmart.
Some of the really basic RCA players are not very fun, but the TH2004 is a good unit. It lets you delete songs without having to hook the bloody thing up to a computer, a feature I really like.

I had not heard of any AAA powered RCA players. Thought the T60 was one one of the last!

I can't find the TH2004 for sale anywhere, and walmart doesn't carry it anymore (nor any other AAA powered RCA players). Do you have any sources?
