I've rented a few times but can't remember what size they were. I'm 160 lbs (hopefully I'll get that down to 150, but you know how that goes sometimes) and at 15 lbs in pack for day trips and around 30 lbs for over-night trips. I'll be using them primarily in the local SoCal mountains (Baldy, San Jacinto, Gorgonio) and possibly in the Sierra. Generally, packed trails, but sometimes not. Would 25" shoes be good adding tails when I'm spending the night or should I go bigger?

25's would work great for you. I'm about same size, a tad heavier, and they work for me. And yeah, if you get MSR's you could always add tails if you need more float in some fresh snow.

Thanks for the advice. I thought 25's would work with my dimensions and intended purpose but a lot of what I read suggested bigger is better.
