Maybe some of the MYOG crowd could share ideas/opinions about the best machine for someone wanting to make gear.
My wife and I use a table top machine for making stuff sacks and bag liners etc.

I want to make some quilts and maybe a pack this summer.

Price is an option!

Quilts you can make with your existing table top machine.

Packs – you will need something heavier, which probably means an older second hand black Singer or similar. The modern light domestic machines can't handle the heavier thread and thicker fabric.

Kevin,

What is your price range? Your current machine may be able to do the job for you. Is it giving you any trouble? Neither a quilt nor pack require a special stitch or a lot of power.

You can make packs with a conventional machine. It's not ideal, but provided you use a heavy needle and design things so that you're not sewing through too many thick layers of webbing and fabric, you'll do fine.
