A acquired a single 4.8oz 120cm Black Diamond Ultra Distance trekking pole with a mind to using it as a tent pole for my Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape. The trekking pole is 47" overall length when locked, which usable with the Gatewood pitched high and can be tilted to get it a bit lower. The pole will collapse to 42.5" when unlocked and I think it is still perfectly useable as a tent pole without being locked. But I wanted to have some sort of adjustment between the two extremes (yes, there are similar pole designs that have some adjustment built in).
I found a tool-less plastic squeeze-style hose clamp at a local home brewing supply store. The clamp is too big to fit snugly on the 0.510"/13mm diameter shaft and the mating surfaces are slick, so I added a section of bicycle inner tube to fill the gap and provide some traction. The clamp weighs 0.6oz/14g and the inner tube section is 0.4oz/10g. It is necessary to wrap the tubing carefully on the shaft, but it will lock up well and I can lean on it hard with no movement.
