This was an idea I came up last summer, as I sat on the banks of the Waptus River, attempting lamely to get my candy bar to be something besides hot chocolate syrup. I kept thinking there had to be a way to have a light pocket that would protect my food. I ended up using my lightweight fabric freezer bag cozy as the concept behind it. I realized that I didn’t need anything bombproof, rather something that would keep the sun off my beloved Milky Ways.

My final version weighs in at roughly 1 ounce, with a velcro closure and fits a 2″ buckle, or can be put on compression straps.

I wrote more about my project on my blog:http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/myblog.htm

That's a great idea, well done.
How does it work in the field?

The son hasn't shredded his yet (he was one of the reasons I tried to come up with an idea-his pack has no usable pockets for snacks). I should have a good track record by the end of the spring. So far the cozies have held up better than I had hoped for – and the pouches are made the same.

Sarah,

The folks who get to backpack with you and your culinary delights must be some lucky, lucky folks! I edited your post to make the link "clickable", hope you don't mind.

I especially like the flame-fabric. Although, perhaps ice-cube patterned fabric would be more fitting.

Thanks for doing that! :-) I finally figured out how to post photos…someday I will master links in HTML.
I love the blue flame material. My test cozies were made of lavender paisley material, and I got a lot of "hilarious" comments from the guys in our hiking group. So from now on, blue flame for me!

David, the thought had crossed my mind. I have a good friend who is type 1 and I am going to send him to try that for. It wouldn't be a claimed use, but if it works, I'd be VERY happy!
