I recently bought a used Feathered Friends Swallow sleeping bag that was about 15 years old. The original owner (who worked for Feathered Friends) had the bag over filled with the best European down they had at the time, around 850 fill. The sleeping bag still looks lofty, and seems warm. The problem is, last night I was looking it over, and I found about 10 feathers poking through the shell, mostly along the seams. I reached from the inside and pulled all of the feathers back in. My question is, should I be concerned? They may have just been occasional feathers that built up during storage. On the other hand, they have poked through just from me handling it. Prior to my purchase, it had been stored in a cotton storage sack for 2 years. Is there any sealant I can use on the seams? Or something I can wash it with to prevent leakage? TIA for answers.

Elijah,
I used to get concerned when my sleeping bags would loose a few feathers here and there…but that was before I personally saw and handled down. When you realize just how much down is in 1 oz, and then you take into account that your sleeping bag probably has anywhere from 9 to 30oz of down inside it (I don't know if your bag is rated to 40 degrees or 0 degrees), a few feathers is entirely negligible in the grand scheme of things. I would hold off on sealing any of the seals until it becomes a huge problem, which I doubt it will. Also, not really sure how washing would help? You generally don't want to wash unless it's really dirty/greasy since the washing process is a huge PIA and you risk down quality degradation if you wash/dry it improperly.
I was just wondering if there was a product I could wash it with that may help make the shell more durable and less prone to feathers poking through. I doubt there is, I was just brainstorming. Thanks, for the advice, by the way.
