Okay so, I have a Marmot Hydrogen 30 deg 850 fill bag. I started noticing that it hasn't been as lofty as when I purchased it.
I got curious and started shifting the down. I realized that with this bag the baffles are continuous from the bottom to the top so I shifted the down from the bottom and moved it to the top. Marmot uses the term "Full Baffle Construction" when referring to this design feature. I left the foot box baffles and hood alone. Now the bag is incredibly lofty on top! In fact, it is even more lofty than a 20 deg REI bag that my brother-in-law owns. With his REI bag, the down cannot be shifted from bottom to top.
I don't need the down on the bottom, my NeoAir XTherm pad provides all the insulation I'll ever need on the bottom.
My questions are:
Due to the shifting of down I have done with my sleeping bag, my 30 deg bag is more lofty on top then a bag rated at 20 deg. Should I assume that it will perform well enough in 20 deg temps provided that I have an XTherm sleeping pad which negates the need for down on the bottom of my bag?
Any of you guys had success with increasing the warmth of your sleeping bag by shifting the down from the bottom to the top?
