Sawyer Squeeze Freezing While Being Shipped

Max, I would doubt it because it had no water in it.

If you can blow through it, it's ruined

If you use the syringe and can with difficulty get water to flow through, it's probably okay

They may test it with water before shipping so it may have a problem

The atmosphere has moisture in it. As discussed in a previous Sawyer Squeeze thread, that moisture can never be totally removed. I'm going to call Sawyer.

Edit: got in touch with Sawyer. They said it should be fine. I'm a little skeptical, but I'll take their word for it. I'm curious as to how small the cracks in the fibers would be if you did freeze your sawyer- for instance, if it freezes on a trip, can you use it to filter out a great majority of contaminants without the guarantee of all of them, because it's better than nothing?

on some thread, someone said if you can blow through it, it's obviously bad

the hollow tubes in the filter that have holes in them must be stretchable – they're plastic, and when you inject water to clean it it stretches the plastic

I think the freeze problem is greatly exhagerated

Sawyer just says replace if it freezes because it's easy

They should test some filters – shake the water out and then freeze, repeat a bunch of times, then see how good it filters

Yet, I have avoided my Squeeze freezing

Do you know what the temp in an unheated airline hold is when the outside temp at 30,000 ft is -45F?

Most ever made would fail in the shipping process if what you worry about is real.

But you have had your first round of "How do I KNOW my filter isnt compromised?"

The answer is "You never will"

About the airline hold….

On Commercial aviation aircraft, the cargo bins are always getting recirculated air from the cabin. If there are known animals on board their is a switch for the pilots to electrically heat the cargo compartments themselves. Even if pets on board are not listed on the load manifest (it happens) there is still enough warm air entering the cargo bins to keep pooch alive- doesnt get to freezing point.

The only time there would be no heated air to the cargo bins is when a fire is detected and then all air and heat sources are shut down to the bin, pooch probably not going to survive for long in those cinditions, but the pilots will have the plane diving down for alternate airports like no tomorrow anyway.

I wouldn't sweat it with a new one. A good dose of vodka or Everclear would probably keep one from freezing after use (NOT denatured alcohol).

There is not enough "water" in the air to fill the tubes. If the tubes are not filled with water freezing won't burst them. So I don't think it is possible to worry about a new unit failing.

Once used though I don't trust myself ever getting all the water out so take care not to let mine freeze.
