I'm surprised to see that there is no forum for repairs. Part of BPL's mission is to promote gear that tends to get torn and abraded and broken, so I thought there would be much discussion of repairs. Am I missing the venue?

If this is the right venue: My rain jacket (2.5 layer Entrant DT, lightweight nylon WP/B fabric) has both a small char hole (roundish, about 3mm at the widest) and a bigger nail tear (two two-inch gashes meeting at a right angle where the nail went in). Any suggestions for how to repair? I'd like something that blends in well enough to fool a first-glancer, but I don't insist on an exact match. I also don't insist on breathability or complete waterproofness of the patch.

I might be able to get an official repair kit from Montane, but since I bought the jacket, used, for cheap, they would probably want me to double my investment.

Are the 2 nail slits very clean and razor cut? or are they ragged in a way so that the fabric no longer meets at the tear? If clean, just use tenacious tape. For the 3mm hole, I would just patch with silnylon and silnet. Cut 2 circular patchs, for either side of the fabric (circles are better shapes than squares as they have no edges to peel). If the nail slits are ragged, do the same patch technique, but just patch from the inside so that it's more subtle.

The MYOG forum is the perfect place to pose these questions…folks there work with all sorts of fabric and know how certain adhesives or stitch techniques correspond with different fabrics.

just buy a new lighter version … thats the BPL way ;)

for the hole simply use seam grip and a nylon patch … the seam grip on tbe back of the patch will waterproof it if you do it right … also put seam grip on the other side

duct tape works as well … or gore tex patches

round off any edges on the patch to prevent it from catching

or buy the newest, latest, greatest, lightest shiny stuff =P

McNett do a range of products for fabric repair.

Also a repair guide http://www.mcnett-outdoor.com/Repair-Guide/122.aspx

I have had good success on smaller repairs on nylon clothing with Spinnaker Tape. Especially burn holes. (It's cheaper than Mc Nett repair tapes/patches in terms of the amount you get for the money, and quite versatile). If it did start to lift at edge at some time later, stick down with seam grip.

Cut curved edges with any repair tape – corners can catch and lift easier.

Here are a few other threads covering this topic, that are displayed when you do a search for “repair nylon hole”:

I hope one of these can help. If not, those were just from the first page of results from the search. There were quite a few more pages with similar threads. Lots of nifty ideas and ways to fix it.
