I'm likely to try a E. E Revelation X quilt to replace my decade old "EMS down 25" that I want to replace because it is now a leaker and it is 3 pounds. This bag is likely 500-600 fill down. I'm really attracted to it because of its weight and cost compared to getting a 20F mummy bag……though I am a bit nervous about trying a quilt. I'll mainly be using it again for backpacking and car camping Colorado in July for a month. I regularly camped above 10,000 feet and the average temperatures at night averaged from mid-30's to low 40's with temperatures averaging in the mid-30's in my 2 weeks in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Here are my main questions:

1) I am 6'2" 175 pounds (skinny to athletic build)and I tend to to move a bit at night side sleeping and sleeping on my back. Should I go with the wide or the regular? The wide is only 1.5oz. more and I'm thinking that the wide may be warmer because I can more easily properly tuck it in. On the other hand it may be unnecessary bulk.

2) How does this 30D material feel and breathe? This is very important to me b/c I don't like bags that leave you feeling sticky and wet.

3) I'm leaning towards getting the 20F with 1oz. of extra down for some resistance against condensation. Should I go with an overstuffed 30F quilt instead? I would consider myself average in terms of how cold i sleep and I sleep with microweight wool long underwear and long sleeve top in order to keep the bag clean and avoid the sticky feeling of skin against nylon. On my 2nd week long trip in the Sangre De Cristo I took medium weight wool underwear b/c I was cold in the legs area at night. I know that my EMS 25 degree bag was more of a 40 degree bag and I always supplemented it with more clothing in the 20-30's.

4) I'm a bit worried about not having a hood……is a down hood needed in the 30's or should a fleece baclava be okay? I could also use the hood from a down jacket that I sometimes bring for for camp use……but it's usually my pillow at night. If I actually wore this down hoody at night it would probably be a bit too warm, but I guess I could just wear the hood of the jacket and tuck the rest under my head.

Michael:
I recently made the move to an EE quilt. Tim at EE will promptly answer any questions you have. My advice is go with the wide, definitely. I would probably pick a 30 degree overstuffed for your conditions. You could buy a Hood but if I was carrying a poofy with a Hood already, I would probably just take a thin knit cap.

I have a regular 6' quilt from Tim, Revelation X. I'm 5'11" and 165-170lbs. The regular is good, but I wouldn't want it any narrower. I agree with Ben that a wide might do you well.

I know everyone here loves the X, and the price is amazing. But I am a sweaty sleeper and MUCH prefer the Revelation's 10d for lining than the rather plasticky 30d. I have the X for my cold weather quilt, but I wouldn't trade the amazing feel of the regular Revelation for anything.

And Tim will help with size/cut questions. Go quilt, you won't regret it…

I'm 5 11" 180# wear size med/large clothing, and went with a REG width Revelation based on Tim's advice. Its being made as we speak so I will know soon how well the width works out for me.

I went with 30 deg with 10% overstuff for high sierra summer/early fall. 10d fabric inner and shell.

I'd go with the 10d fabrics which are NOBUL 1 and 2. Also remember you could get the 30 degree quilt and multi use your jacket and clothes when you go to bed.

I'd rather hold my jacket and some of my other clothes in reserve in case a cold snap comes thru instead of using them for ever night of sleeping. It's gotta be cold if you are "geared" up for just a normal, Sierra night and a storm comes thru and you are freezing with all your gear. It can get into the lower 20'sF in the summer here. I was out one Fall in the Southern Sierra and it got to the single digits two nights in a row. The second night I had to drape my synthetic fill jacket over my chest somewhere in the night and I was fine in my WM Apache 15F bag. If I had been in a 25F bag or even a summer bag, I'd been miserable.

Our new REG is 54" wide so between last years REG 52" and WIDE 56", our new WIDE is 58"

We made these changes because 52" is tight for most on their side but 56" was often called "huge", so we split the difference which should work for most avg sized side sleepers. It also allows us to forgo the XWIDE sine the new WIDE is only 2" smaller

I'll also echo comments on the fabrics, the 10D is like silk but the 30D can be sticky. Jen's strategy of using the softer fabrics on a warmer weather quilt and saving money on the cold one since you'll always have cloths on makes sense, very smart.

1)It seems like many are recommending the revelation materials over the "X's" 30D. Is this even if I will almost always be wearing thin wool pants and a long sleeve shirt? Is the 30D also significantly less breathable in addition to be stickier next to the skin than the 15D Impetus and 10D NB1? Honestly, I'm a bit nervous about a 10D lining in terms of down leakage…..but I have no experience with this material.

2) A Dav, what does that mean that you went with 10% overstuff? Does this mean 10% more than the standard 20% oversuff or did you ask Tim not to overstuff his standard 20%?

I echo USA Duane Hall comment that I'd rather save the puffy for when things get unexpectedly bad than as my standard sleep wear. That's how I've used it until now and I like it that way, so that I almost always sleep comfortably so I can have more fun hiking or playing (climbing and fishing) the next day. This is why I was leaning more towards the 20F. However, I may be going too far because I have been using an over-rated leaky decade old 25F bag for too long. It would not be good to have a bag where I am too hot most nights.

I would not be concerned about the 10D material. Its really nice. Tim wouldn't sell you a leaky quilt. Its also very silky; I agree.

As far as temp rating, I have used my 30 degree quilt right down to about 30 degrees. It was just barely enough for me. I think a 30 overstuff would be comfy down to 30 for most people.

I meant I added the $5 option for 1 portion of "extra" overstuff on top of the normal 20% overstuff that comes with every quilt.

I have something like 18-20 nights on my 2012 Rev X. The 30D isn't silky smooth, but it's not plasticky either IMO. I find it breathes great. Mine is a 30 degree and I've recently used it down to 17 degrees wearing my normal baselayers, my hiking pants, a light fleece jacket, and a 12 oz puffy. All my base layers and jackets have hoods so I don't fiddle with a separate hood. I stayed warm and consider myself a semi-cold sleeper. This is about the lowest I would go though w/o supplemental leg insulation.

If I were to get another one (and I might soon!), I'd get a 20 degree Rev in the Reg width. 2.5 oz for another 10 degrees seems worth it to me and the 20 degree wouldn't be excessively warm the rest of the year.

Thread detour.
Tim, income tax as been computed, e-file tomorrow, money to burn. When will the Epiphanys be back on site? Maybe I'll go for one, looking to save mucho weight, currently using a 1.5 lb WM Caribou. Just not sure of the clamminess of the Epiphany with the cuben material.

I can cool my heels. I read the one review here, wow, so versatile, can't recall the weight.
