So I'm planning a CDT 2013 thru and was looking for a smaller pack than the Catalyst that I used on the PCT. I really like the OHM 2.0 but have read may times that it is not bear can friendly. So I have thought about when using a bear can having a food stuff sack to store food in the pack during the day, and putting an adhesive strapping loop on the BC and attaching in to the strap on the top of the pack. Then packing food in the BC at night since you pretty much have to empty a BC at night it to cook dinners anyway.

Any thoughts?

OK, so long as you use a proven odorproof bag liner, and are willing to risk its not working 100%, or leaking odors to its exterior when you take it in and out of the pack and take food in and out of it. If food odors permeate the pack, it will attract bears. They can't see that there is no food in there until they check it out.
Amazon sells (or used to) a clip'n'seal clamp that will keep Opsacs from opening under pressure.

That's odd. I've done the JMT 4 times with a Bearikade in my Ohm. Works fine.

ooooooo… nothing like a 15 pound cantilever hanging off the back of your pack.

Glad it works for you, …. but no thanks.

that's exactly what I was thinking Michael. Greg good to know that what size of Bearikade did you use, and did it fit vertically or horizontally?

Here is my weekender on the outside of my Circuit just crossing Windy Ridge on the SHR. Never was an issue fully loaded on the outside of the pack…makes a great seat also!

My first bear can was the old Garcia. When I got it I also got a cloth bag for it that had tie points for straps. So on my first hike with it I simply put it in the sack and then strapped it down to the top of my pack. The only issue I had was that it tended move and occasionally bumped my head. That problem was easy to solve by changing how I packed my backpack and how I strapped it down. Note that I kept the food in the bear can when I was hiking

Currently I am using a bearikade Scout but I haven't tried strapping it to the outside of My pack because I now have enough room to store it inside the pack. The ribbed design of the bear vault canisters is more amendable to strapping it down on the outside.

I agree with Greg that that sounds odd. I have used the Berikade Weekender in a pre-2012 Gorilla and HMG Windrider(regualar not 3400) and it worked great. I would think the Ohm would work fine.
