I talked to Ron at the PCT Trails Fest about his packs (Six Moons) and hadn't realized that they packs would go down to small torsos. I know that the Starlite can have a small harness (and hipbelt also) and that the Essence does come in a small (going down to a 14" torso!). The Essence has me wondering if it will work…that maybe I have found a pack for my son finally? His base weight is around 9-10 lbs dry (that includes his current pack in the weight), so weight wise he can do it.
I am still looking, hoping the kid, oh, I don't know, pops to a 15" torso! (He has a 14" right now).
Help! Anyone with feedback on an Essence?

Hi Sarah:
Sorry, no actual experience whatsoever. But don't you live reasonably close to Ron (I know Bernie Wilt does)? If yes, then maybe you and your son can do a "field trip" and pay Ron a visit. This way, Ford can try out the different packs, harnesses and belts — and the two of you can play with the Lunar Solo and Lunar Duo tents while you're there!
Mostly it is depressing-I am going to end up spending a ton on that weasel ;-) The doofus will have nicer gear than me. And that isn't right you know! Hehheh….
Oh yeah, and I have pretty much conceded that trail runners work better for him than boots. We'll see how his feet hold up after this coming week.
I think he'll have to use the Deuter next week, but, then…..he needs a bigger pack. He gets his Ursack next week-and starts carrying his food! Yay!
You think hiking is expensive? Just give him another few years when he'll be cleaning out the fridge faster than you can ever stock it! And it will only get more expensive when he "falls in love". And all this is way before we even talk about college!
Thanks for reminding me the bliss of being single. I just focus on gear. :)
Hahhah…why do you think I REALLY got Ford an Ursack this year? Yeah, to carry the 2 lbs of food he hoovers down a day. I eat 1 lb or so. I CANNOT continue to carry 3 lbs of food a day. If I did, this summer there's be points where I'd be hauling 20 lbs of food.
My back can't handle it!!
So that is why Junior needs a bigger backpack: to carry the larder. Lol…..either that or a UL donkey.
