It was pouring down rain today here in sunny San Diego, and it led me to think more about my rain gear set up. I have a Montane Minimus rain jacket [7.6oz], and a cuben pack cover [1.1oz]. I also probably need a rain skirt, as I have no rain protection for my lower body right now [1.4oz, cuben Zpacks]. This adds up to 10.1 oz. An Integral Designs Sil Poncho weighs just 9oz and covers all 3 of these bases: upper and lower body protection, and pack cover.
I do most of my hiking with a friend, or with my girlfriend – so a second set of trekking poles are usually available. I'm considering the use of a poncho tarp as a supplement to a Grace Duo/YMG Net-tent setup. I could imagine that the poncho would make a nice wind break, vestibule/beak for the Grace Duo – a place to change clothes, cook, place gear out of the way, etc.
The additional weight from guylines and stakes is also a factor. This set up is also about $200-250 cheaper than what I use now.
Thoughts? Has anyone tried this?
