I received TOPO! for Washington State for my birthday, and have been playing around with it. I'm used to using the Green Trails and Custom Correct maps, which are 1:62,500 and 1:69,000. I'm finding the maps on TOPO! really hard to read, and wouldn't really want to rely on it for navigation.
Any tips to make it easier to read? Just finding trails on it is really hard to begin with, and it's hard to see elevations on it. I printed out a map for an area that I'm pretty familiar with, after having marked the trail with the red line that the marking tool defaults to. Now that I look at it off the screen, I realize that if I just picked up the map, I'm not sure I could figure out where the trail is easily. I know that there's at least one connecting trail, which I can't see, and it's cumbersome to figure distances.
