Does anyone else on here (besides John A.!) use this for sleeping in cold temperatures when backpacking? I don't sleep in bitter cold temps but I am a cold sleeper and am wondering if the weight of this gear is worth any advantages. Thanks!

I don't use it but I use a similar principle when I backpack in the cold. I usually wear some kind of polypro or merino fabric over my nose and mouth. The fabric is easy to breath through but it absorbs moisture from my breath which both warms incoming air slightly and (more important for me) restores humidity to dry alpine air. I notice I lose considerably less moisture using this method so it keeps me hydrated better.

I personally wouldn't consider carrying anything major like the Talus unless it was truly bitter cold temps (I'm thinking highs in the teens if not colder). A bandana should suffice for you and be lighter and less cumbersome while sleeping.

Thanks Dustin!

Yeah, you stay out of this John. You are the one who really started this…

I use a similar mask for cold weather sleeping. It has a bronze mesh air inlet that warms the air, thus preventing colder (drier) air from dehydrating you as much.

I use this for sleeping as well as hiking in cold temps. However, I find it a bit stifling unless it's well below freezing out. When it is really cold, though, it is awesome.

I throw my Rab Momentum jacket over my head. Nice little climate in there. As mentioned above, pretty good at curving dehydration… and frozen drool.
