Does anyone have any experience with this? Or do I need a thicker fabric? Heading for sandly country and mosquito country in the not too distant future.

That is what I do with my windshirt, use it as mosquito block.
I found my Tachyon over a thin knit polyester shirt to be a very hot but effective deterrent to apocalypse-level Sierra mosquitos a couple years back. I’ll never do it again but it worked.
Rather than going with the armor approach to your clothing, try chemical warfare instead. I’d recommend either buying pre-treated permithrin clothing or treat your own. That usually works for me for the spring hatching in the Sierra Nevada.
